SLS Spelling app — privacy policy

This policy covers the SLS Spelling app for iPad and iPhone. For the website you are reading now, see our GDPR and privacy policy.

Last updated: September 2026

The short version: the app collects nothing about the person using it. There is no account to create, no sign-in, and no personal data of any kind is gathered, transmitted or stored by us. A learner's answers, scores and progress stay on their own device and are never sent to us or to anyone else. There are two narrow exceptions, both explained below: your App Store subscription, which Apple handles, and Apple's crash reports, which reach us only if the device owner has chosen to share them.

What we collect

Nothing. The app never sends us, and we never receive:

  • names, email addresses, postal addresses or telephone numbers;
  • dates of birth, ages, school or class details;
  • location data;
  • contacts, photos, microphone or camera data;
  • device identifiers, advertising identifiers or IP addresses;
  • usage analytics of our own.

There are no accounts, no sign-in and no user profiles. We could not identify an individual user of the app even if we were asked to.

The name on the device

The app keeps a profile so that more than one person can use the same device. That profile has a display name, which starts as a placeholder and can be changed in Settings. You are free to use a first name, a nickname or to leave the placeholder alone — the app does not care, and nothing checks who you are.

That name is held only on the device, alongside the results. It is never sent to us and never leaves the device unless the person using it chooses to export their data.

Results and progress

The words a learner attempts, the answers they give, their scores and their progress are stored only on the device where the work was done. That information is never uploaded, never sent to us, and never shared with any third party.

Deleting the app removes that data from the device. If the device owner has switched on Apple's device backup or iCloud backup, app data may be included in their own backup — that backup belongs to them and is controlled by their Apple account settings, and we have no access to it.

Crash reports

The app contains no crash reporting or analytics software of our own and no third-party service of that kind.

Apple runs its own crash reporting across iOS. If the owner of the device has chosen to share analytics with app developers — that is the Share with App Developers setting under Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements — Apple may pass us a crash report when the app stops unexpectedly.

A crash report is a technical snapshot of what the app was doing at the moment it failed. It is not a copy of a learner's results, and it is not linked to a name or an account. It can, however, include fragments of whatever the app was holding in memory at that moment, and that may include a word being typed when the crash happened. We cannot control what a crash report contains — that is decided by iOS, not by us.

We use these reports only to find and fix bugs, and we do not attempt to identify anyone from them. Sharing is off unless the device owner turns it on, and it can be turned off again at any time in the same place.

Tracking and advertising

The app does not track you. It contains no advertising, no advertising networks, no analytics services and no third-party tracking software of any kind. It does not link any data to your identity, because it does not gather any data in the first place. We do not ask for permission to track you across other apps or websites, because we never do so.

Children

The app is suitable for use by children as well as adults. Because the app collects no personal data from anyone, it collects no personal data from children either. There is nothing for a parent, carer or school to request, correct or delete from our systems, because we hold nothing.

Subscriptions and payment

The app is sold on a subscription basis through the App Store. Apple handles the whole transaction: you subscribe, pay and cancel through your Apple Account, and your payment details go to Apple, never to us. We never see and never store your card details, billing address or Apple Account credentials.

Apple gives us only anonymous, aggregated sales and subscription figures. Those tell us how many subscriptions there are, not who holds them, and we cannot connect them to an individual person or device.

You can view, change or cancel a subscription at any time in the Subscriptions section of your Apple Account settings. Apple's handling of the purchase is governed by Apple's privacy policy, not by this one.

Third parties

Apart from the App Store transaction and the crash reports described above, both of which are handled by Apple, the app works offline and sends nothing to any external service. There are no other third parties involved. We do not sell, rent or share personal data, because we do not have any.

Your rights

Data protection law gives you rights over personal data held about you. As we hold no personal data from users of the app, there is nothing for us to disclose, correct, export or erase. If you believe otherwise, or you simply want to check, please contact us using the details below and we will answer.

Changes to this policy

If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and change the date at the top before that version is released.
